Mooning Over Your Health

“Well, what’s the Moon got to do with it?”

A lot! All of us know the tremendous effect the moon exerts on our planet and its denizens. Who does not know of the moon’s effect on the oceans’ tides? Have we not read and heard about – or even seen the havoc wreaked upon thousands of unsuspecting sailors over the ages who have foolishly ventured out into the high seas during the night of the new moon and paid for it with their lives? Even animals fear the Moon: have we not seen dogs and wolves howl at the full moon, and other animals behaving erratically or fearfully during the full moon? Closer to home, it’s widely believed that the 28 day menstrual cycle of women is based on the 28 lunar cycle. And sages of yore as well as modern day psychiatrists swear that people with mental diseases, even those who are normally docile, become extremely violent during the full or new moon – they become lunatics!

That is the power of the moon over our planet.

Of course, there’s a scientific explanation to this phenomenon that has been available to traditional medicine, especially Siddha, over thousands of years. The moon orbits the earth every 28 days, and generates a huge magnetic field that exerts both centrifugal and centripetal forces of immense magnitude. These forces act upon the constituents of our bodies – those constituents that govern our body’s physical wellness and mental stability. When the power of the moon’s gravity reaches its zenith (new moon day) or its lowest ebb (full moon day), the salts in the body begin to transform into potentially toxic compounds that could negatively affect the body. Considering that our entire body is composed of various kinds of salts, and our blood too is largely based on different salts, the damage caused could be considerable. Therefore, on these days, it is best to avoid any kind of salt intake. The best way would be to fast on these days – something that is good for you even in the normal course of events. However, if for some compelling reason you cannot fast, it would be best to have fruits, sweets or other foods that have low or no salt content. This way, you avoid the damage that would be otherwise caused to the health of your body and mind!

The moon has always been associated with romance and mystery. It is. However, next time you think the full moon is romantic, or that the new moon is wonderfully mysterious, remember: it is, as long as you stay away from salt.

Jaundice – Cause, Effect and Cure

Tip: Having a small ball sized portion of the mashed leaves of the plants leucas aspera (thumbai), eclipta prostrata (karisilankanni) and phyllanthus amarus (keezhanelli) in equal proportion in a half cup of curds from cow’s milk, along with a simple diet can cure even acute jaundice within a short period.

“But I don’t have bad habits such as drinking, smoking or eating junk food, so I will never have jaundice!”

Oh yeah, so you think. What most people do not know is that some form of jaundice affects almost all humans at some point in their lives, irrespective of their age, gender, race or social status. Even animals are known to contract jaundice. In fact, a rather common, harmless condition known as prenatal or neonatal jaundice affects the unborn or newborn child! So there!

As you probably know, jaundice is a condition associated with liver diseases such as hepatitis (hepa=liver, titis=infection) or liver cancer[i]. It must be understood that jaundice itself is not a disease, but rather a symptom of disorders in the process of metabolism and excretion of bilirubin. Jaundice is chiefly characterised by a loss of appetite, yellowness of the eyes, dark urine, irritation or even extreme pain during urination, nausea, restlessness, insomnia, and in acute cases, swelling and inflammation of the joints and difficulty in movement. Hepatitis-1B is a form of jaundice that is usually fatal. Internal symptoms include enlargement of the liver or pancreas, dilation of the biliary duct in the case of stone blockage, cirrhosis or even liver failure.

Jaundice is usually caused by conditions created due to excessive drinking, smoking, and bad food habits. However, it can also be brought about by obstruction of the normal flow of bilirubin by gall bladder stones. Jaundice can also be triggered by malaria and other pathological conditions and diseases. This means that even if you’re not a smoker, drinker, or even have bad food habits, there are a number of factors that could send you to hospital with acute jaundice! There goes your claim that because you’re a great guy, you’ll never get jaundice!

The best bet against jaundice of course is prevention, the eschewing of practices such as drinking, smoking or bad eating habits. However, should jaundice strike, there’s a potent, non-invasive and rather not too unpleasant herbal remedy that has been available to traditional medicine, especially Siddha, over thousands of years. In traditional Siddha, the fundamental methodology is to attack the root of the disease, rather than eliminate just the symptoms. So the basic approach is to practice ascetism during the course of the treatment – a total elimination of all the factors that cause the disease. No drink, smoke, drugs or junk food. A lot of rest, and herbal treatment using age old recipes and formulas does the trick – you get better in the course of a couple of weeks. However, beware – jaundice could strike again anytime should you start indulging yourself again!

Top 10 Tips to Avoid Addiction

Tip: Addiction is an incurable but controllable disease. All we need to do is to understand our situation, accept all the help we can, and have faith that we can lead a normal life, one day at a time.

“I am not an addict. I don’t need tips on how to avoid addiction.”

Well, maybe not right now, but you can't be too sure. Drug addiction, alcoholism, substance abuse and peripheral addictions such as gambling and sex are affecting more lives each day. Even children as young as 4 years have begun to be affected by this dreadful disease. Today, addiction accounts for more deaths and destruction than any other factor. It’s growing at such an alarming rate that the UN has declared it a global pandemic, and has declared a global war on addiction.

Addiction is more appropriately called 'chemical dependency', because it is usually caused by the deficiency of naturally occurring mood altering enzymes, such as norepinephrine and dopamine, which are mood altering enzymes in the brain. Addicts crave to compensate for this deficiency through other external sources, but what they do not realize is that this chemical dependency only deepens and worsens over time, resulting in a life of misery, penury, ignominy and suffering, both for the addicts and their families and friends. Left unchecked, addicts usually end up first on the streets, then in various rehabilitation facilities, prisons, or mental institutions. And of course, an untimely, horribly painful death is the ultimate inevitability.

However, help is at hand. Today, more and more people are beginning to realize that addiction is not a wanton condition, and have begun to accept it for the pathological disease that it actually is. Several organizations, chief among them being Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and its sister organization Narcotics Anonymous (NA) have specialized methodologies to arrest an individual’s addiction, and to put them back on the track of a normal life. Another sister organization, Al-Anon, helps to rehabilitate the families of addicts. Religions institutions, social organizations, and even corporates and businesses today are willing to help those addicts who want to help themselves.

But one does not have to go through the risk laden cycle of pain and agony of addiction and rehabilitation to return to a normal life. The proverbial prevention is more essential in the case of addiction than anywhere else. So here are the top 10 tips to prevent addiction, and to help you lead a normal life without ever having to go through the pain of this dreaded disease that has been aptly described as ‘cunning, baffling, and powerful.’

1. Assess yourself. Are you an addict? You can determine this by truthfully answering the 20- question Addiction Test (http://www.leecountyaa.org/questions.html).
2. If you seem to display the characteristics of an addict, or heading to be one, seek help immediately. The best way would be to approach your local AA or NA Chapter and speak to the counsellor there. With their help, you might need to visit a detoxification center or even spend a brief stint at a rehabilitation center. The list of AA and NA chapters is available at the their website (http://www.aa.org/lang/en/subpage.cfm?page=71).
3. If you’re not an addict, well, you can celebrate. But wait, that doesn’t mean you won’t become one. So the first thing is to ensure you stay that way. Learn about addiction. You can start by reading all you can about addiction and the horrors it can bestow upon anyone who falls into its death trap. Begin with AA and NA publications. Look up the internet. Talk to recovering addicts you know.
4.  Keep your friends circle limited to non-addicts.
5. Maintain excellent relations with your family members and friends, and make at least one confidant among them with whom you can share any information you want and call out for help when you need it. Discuss addiction and related problems with them on an informal basis.
6. When you attend office or other parties, there’s nothing wrong if you tell them you’re a teetotaler. In fact, you should feel proud of it, and you can rest assured many people will appreciate you for it.
7. Attend AA or NA meetings in your locality at least twice a month, and listen to the sharings there. Take whatever concerns you, and leave behind what doesn’t apply to you.
8. Whenever you have the time, take up some social cause that appeals to you. It need not necessarily concern addiction – it could be doing service at a Blue Cross or SPCA center, or spending time with the aged at an old age home or at an orphanage.
9.  Never carry too much money with you. Temptation strikes when your pockets are full – even if it does not tempt you directly, your wallet might attract the wrong kind of attention from your ‘using’ friends, and you might end up not only footing the bill, but also in falling into the addiction trap. So keep your wallet light, and out of sight of anyone else.
10. This is the most important. When you feel the urge to indulge, reach out to that special person who’ll be able to talk you out of it, or one who can reach you wherever you are at any time of day or night. That could be a friend, an AA or NA member, or a family member.

These top 10 tips for avoiding addiction will not only help you keep this deadly killer disease at bay, it will also help you get closer to family and friends. Moreover, this way you can give back your bit of good to society. So don’t waste any time – start using these tips right away, and ensure that you live a long, healthy, happy, full and addiction free life!

HAPPY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014 !!!

What makes a gift invaluable and priceless? A gift should not be judged by its material value but rather by the love and creativity that goes into making it. A gift's value also does not lie in the effort that goes in making it. A gift can be simple but still beautiful because of the thoughtfulness and the underlying message that is the inspiration behind it.

The best gifts are always the ones that have the personal touch and thus encompass the individuality of the giver. The gift making might be effortless but a lot of planning should go into it. A gift can be simple or intricate and that purely depends on the personality of the person for whom it is being designed or crafted. The occasion is equally important when deciding on a gift.

Celebrate the spirit of Christmas this year with your loved ones by surprising them with a gift that is unique and personal at the same time

*** Santa Claus is on his way, ***
